Back Door Man

The first post – reason enough to be superstitious! To start off things on an auspicious note, Ladies and Gentlemen, from Los Angeles, California, Jim, Ray, Robbie and John, The Doors!

The Doors has always been one of my most favourite bands. Jim’s poetry and voice, Ray’s haunting organ, Robbie’s jazz infected notes and John’s unique drumming – this was one of the first bands that I truly became a fan of. Their sound was and has always been unique and that is the reason, and not Jim’s theatrics that drew me to them. In my opinion Jim would have never reached his cult status if it was not for the three others. And Jim knew that – he was amazingly loyal to his band despite the personal adulation he received.

Well, to be true to the promise of this blog, I feature not one of their well-known hits, but a lesser known but as brilliant song, a cover version actually of a blues track written by Willie Dixon for Howlin’ Wolf, titled ‘Back Door Man‘ – though Jim takes extreme liberties with the lyrics! Jim, you see,  according to his biographers and several other people who knew him, was in love with the Blues. Numerous tracks from their albums bear testimony to this fact and they have covered quite a few Blues standards, in studio as well as performing live.

Enjoy listening to the Wolf original and the Doors’ version below. Also watch a video of The Doors performing the song live.
