(It was Hendrix’s birthday last Saturday and this post was planned on the day. But due to both unfortunate and unforeseen circumstances it has been delayed! But better late than never.)
There’s nothing much left to say about Jimi Hendrix – all that had to be said has been said by all. A wizard who wove his magic around a six-stringed instrument doing things no one even thought was possible and all the while entertaining his audience – Jimi Hendrix is one legend that will probably endure long after the rest are forgotten. So I thought how does this humble blog pay tribute to this genius extraordinaire? And I decided I can’t – featuring some well-known tracks or some rarities works for others but will not work for him. Then an idea struck – how about covering covers of Hendrix?! My idea was to find really diverse or really weird interpretations of popular Hendrix pieces. And so that has been my endeavour in this post.
Let us start off with a pretty bluesy cover of Little Wing by the Allman Brothers Band featuring Eric Clapton.
A very funky, a very RHCP version of Fire!
If you don’t know who’s Buckethead you should read this first I guess – he is a pretty interesting character in his own right! Here he really rips Stone Free to shreds!
Okay, now things take an interesting turn – Jamie Cullum does a very jazzy Wind Cries Mary.
Angelique Kidjo invites the Blues legend Buddy Guy to join her on stage for a unique interpretation of Voodoo Child.
And this one’s the craziest of them all! Nigel Kennedy, a renowned classical violinist who is known to bend rules more than a little, plays an incredible cover of Purple Haze!
