D For Brother

D For Brother were Amyt Datta and Monojit Datta, brothers, musicians, maestros! Amyt was the guitarist; Monojit (he was more popularly known by his nickname, Kochoo) was the full-time drummer/percussionist and part-time multi-instrumentalist! Taking a break from playing in all kinds of rock bands in and around Calcutta/Kolkata, they released an eponymous album of World Music in 1992, did a few concerts (even one in Europe if I remember correctly) and then moved on to other forms of experimentation in music. Last I knew, Monojit was going strong leading what is probably the only Latin band in India and Amyt plays guitar in a Rock band, Skinny Alley as well as in an ‘impossible-to-categorize quartet’ PINKNOISE.

I had bought their tape when it had come out in 1992 and had also attended one of their concerts. Quite by chance, a few weeks back, I suddenly remembered a track from that album and I started looking for the mp3s. I had a bunch of them, converted from the tape a long, long time back – the quality was not that great and for some stupid reason I had not converted all the tracks – and the tape is not with me any more. Then I started searching on the net and discovered some more at Amyt’s bandcamp page. But the tracks were not of great quality. So, I worked on them as well as the ones I had, trying to clean them up as much as my amateur Audacity skills permitted. The result – almost the entire album except a couple of tracks(#7 & 10). For nostalgia’s sake…
