Reggae Rock – that is a genre that’s ought to be unusual, I thought to myself. After a listen JoBu turned out to be more Rock than Reggae with a propensity for jamming. But that’s a good thing, right?! Jobu is Aaron VanVooren on lead vocals and guitar, Matt Hines on lead guitar, Andrew Neel on bass and Evan Ryan on drums and percussion, with all the three guitarists being classical guitar majors! Though they have been around since 2005 this the first time they have released an album. It’s called Stop Time and is available on CDBaby and iTunes and it’s a kick-ass, feel-good album with some great music and talented musicians, though the jam element is partly sacrificed at the altar of radio-and-low-attention-span-friendliness!
My favourites from the album are Stop Time and Voices. Stop Time starts out with this thick reggae bass line that promises great things and the song doesn’t disappoint. It builds up nicely and then ends in a clean guitar solo that leaves you wanting more. The other song Voices has a catchy opening riff, somewhat reminiscent of surf rock and is slightly on the sweeter side.
Here are 4 songs from their album as a sneak preview. If you like them and want to get hold of the entire album, you can find it here. So, without any further ado, AI presents JoBu! To borrow a phrase from the title track, hope you ‘love that little stop time beat’!
